The Rebirth of Surja - Udayan Ghar Programme

Losing her parents due to untimely death and being physically abused by her relatives, Surja was devoid of the love, care and protection every child deserves. Unable to bear her family circumstances and treatment she went through, Surja ran away from her home to escape the horrific situation in search of a better place to live. Udayan Care became home in 2013 for Surja and her sister.

Surja with the support, love and care of her Mentor Parent, Caregivers, Social Worker and counselling by our Mental Health Professionals, gained confidence to overcome the trauma and starting afresh, found a new lease to life. She gradually rebuilt her emotional strength from her fractured attachments and began trusting people at the home to share her concerns.  Her determination led her to completing her schooling from a renowned public  school with flying colors scoring  91% in her Class XII Boards.  Her admission in B.A. Pol Science (Hons.) in Maharaja Agrasen College, Delhi University was the source of an inspiring media story, the heart of which lay in Udayan Care’s constant endeavour to advocate for change, one child, one youth at a time .  Read the story here

Michael reunites with his father after 11 years - Udayan Ghar Programme

Michael was transferred to Udayan Care Home, Gurugram on 07th July 2017 at the age of 15 years. Upon probing it was found that the child had got separated from his family at the tender age of 8 years and since then had been living in some institution turned out to be Michael’s worst nightmare.

The trauma Michael had faced because of his mother’s death, separation from the family, and exposure to abuse and neglect, had a significant impact on his tender brain which resulted in loss of the memories of his family and about the separation, among many other issues like loss of self-esteem, ability to trust others, etc.

Michael’s life took a turn when he found shelter at the loving Udayan Ghar where the caregivers provided him with the tender affection and care he had not known from so many years. He eventually started building trust on others and the quiet Michael who did not used to talk to anyone, could now be seen laughing and chirping with his brothers at the home.

Even though Michael was surrounded with the most loving and nurturing people he had encountered in years, his heart longed to find his long lost family where he spent his early years. The child welfare officer took the task of finding Michael’s family upon himself but, as Michael had lost most of his memories related to his family and home, it became a strenuous task.

There were times when one would get filled with hope on getting a lead but the other moment it would again become more ravelled. After numerous futile efforts, the welfare officer was finally able to get a reliable clue following which the welfare officer and Michael entered deep into the labyrinth of Mahipalpul Village in Delhi. After walking for hours in the village, street after street, Michael final saw a familiar face; it was his father whom he thought he would never get to meet again. As Michael revealed his identity to his father, whose hair had now started turning grey, tears sprung from the father’s eyes as he just could not believe that the son he had lost 11 years ago was finally in front of his eyes.

The father and the son spent hours talking to each other about the memories they share. Michael now wants to complete his studies so that he can support his poor father when he goes back to him. This reunion was a memorable one and even filled the welfare officer’s eyes with tears.
