At the event, some distinguished Government and NGO functionaries also shared their thoughts and insights on the situation of Aftercare in India. They also talked about the significance of the study at this juncture, and its value in guiding informed policies and practices. A Panel Discussion on ‘Making Aftercare a Priority’ saw the commitments from 5 State Government representatives. It was an exchange that created much hope and highlighted many current and planned initiatives. The study received extensive media coverage and support of many state governments and judiciary. Following up this seminar now the Udayan Care’s Advocacy and Research team prepares to fan out across the country to spread the word about Care Leavers rights across the country.

Mumbai Shalini Fellows Residential Camp

USF Mumbai conducted a residential camp for the Batch-2 Shalinis on July 6-7, 2019 at K.J. Somaiya College. The camp began with understanding the expectations of the Shalinis from the camp and then dived into a number of team-building activities, curated and led by Dhruvi Mody (Counsellor, Life Skill Trainer and Mountaineer), supported by Anita Amarnath (Mentor) and Pooja Mehra (USF Mumbai-Convener).
The highlight of the camp was a talent show aimed at building confidence amongst them in front of an audience.

We are grateful to Amrita Somaiya (Advisory Board Member of Mumbai) and the staff members for helping us in organising the residential camp in their beautiful college premises.

Industrial Visit for Shalinis at Baddi

An important element of the USF programme is to expose Shalinis to real work situations so that they develop and understanding of the corporate culture. An industrial Visit to the Luminous Manufacturing Plant was conducted for Batch-II fellows of Luminous supported Shalinis.

Real workstations, Plants, Machines and Work systems were all a first time experience for the Shalinis and was enhanced with an interactive session with technical or administrative experts of the organization.

Giving back: Shalinis worked on Awareness Program on Menstrual Hygiene

Building social awareness about issues that affect girls in India brought  our Greater NOIDA Shalinis, to the slums of Banghel in July. They interacted with the women there and conducted an awareness session on menstrual hygiene and distributed sanitary pads among them. Many Traditional myths and misconceptions about menstruation were busted, as our girls shared the knowledge they had gained through the workshops they attended earlier, on the subject.
